Judgment and Planning in Chess (Euwe) is another old favourite. Very, very philosophical about the relationship between theory and practice Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy (John Watson) is not a very old book, but I think its proving a timeless treasure. Lots of fun, but if you need to work on your endgames, you need another book 100 short games, all 25 moves or less, illustrating such common (for intermediate players) themes as neglected development, poisoned pawns, king in the centre, exchange sacrifices, etc. One Hundred Soviet Chess Miniatures (PH Clarke) is an old favourite of mine. I have a lot of the old favourites, and a few old books that probably deserved a better fate (or maybe not). What I find odd is that I don't have any of the books mentioned above on my shelf. Regardless, there is no shortage of such books. I was about to make a smart-a$$ed comment about what is an intermediate player? but thought better of it. Grandmaster Chess Strategy by Jürgen Kaufeld & Guido Kern "Engqvist gives us a rare treat and a genuine, sympathetic understanding of one of chess' greats who nowadays tends to gets lost in the shuffle!" - Michael Ciamarra (2014) Petrosian: Move by Move by Thomas Engqvist Petrosian’s Legacy by Tigran Petrosian (1990) The reader participates by assessing positions and invariably receives useful tips for practical play." - FM Harry Schaack Each chapter defines the structures, explains the typical characteristics and shows the plans for both White and Black. "The didactic concept of the book is admirable. The Power of Pawns by GM Jörg Hickl (2016) I'd seen one of the games he quotes in his chapter but I'd never remotely made any link to a structured way of fighting the Hedgehog structure, so this chapter was a real eye-opener for me. "There is also masses of stuff in the book that made me go 'Oooh!' and 'Aaah!' so I think it will have the same effect on you! In particular, I loved Rios' exposition of White's plan of exerting queenside pressure against Hedgehog systems.
